Kimberley Vessel Guide: Heritage Adventurer

Is Heritage Adventurer the Right Kimberley Cruise for You?

If you’re looking for a Kimberley cruise where exploration, wildlife and learning matter more than big-ship facilities and entertainment, Heritage Adventurer deserves a place on your shortlist.

Heritage Adventurer is an expedition ship first and foremost. The focus is on getting out and experiencing the Kimberley with an experienced Expedition Team, then returning to a comfortable ship at the end of the day.

But that doesn’t mean she’s the right choice for everyone.

One of the things we spend a lot of time doing at Expedition Partners is helping travellers understand the differences between Kimberley cruise ships. For some, Heritage Adventurer will be a great match. Others will be better suited to a smaller vessel or a ship with more extensive onboard facilities.

Our own Dani recently travelled aboard Heritage Adventurer, which has also given us some useful firsthand feedback about the ship, cabins, food and life onboard.

What makes Heritage Adventurer different?

Heritage Adventurer was originally built as a polar expedition vessel, and that expedition ethos remains at her heart.

In the Kimberley, that means getting into Zodiacs, heading ashore, looking for wildlife, visiting rock art sites and learning about the landscapes and history you’re travelling through.

The ship itself is comfortable and surprisingly spacious, without trying to be an ultra-luxury expedition ship.

For many travellers, that’s exactly the appeal.

The Expedition Experience

This is one of Heritage Adventurer’s biggest strengths.

The Expedition Team includes specialists such as marine biologists, ornithologists, naturalists and photographers.

They’re not simply onboard to give lectures. They join you ashore and on Zodiac excursions, helping you understand the wildlife, landscapes and places you’re seeing along the way.

There’s a real emphasis on learning and discovery, particularly around wildlife, birdlife, marine life, photography and natural history.

There are also lectures and presentations onboard. You certainly don’t have to attend everything — you can head to the pool, gym or find somewhere quiet to read instead — but if you enjoy learning about where you’re travelling, you’ll get a lot out of them.

You don’t just see the Kimberley – you come away understanding it.

Getting Out and Exploring

Days in the Kimberley can include Zodiac excursions, guided walks, waterfall visits, Aboriginal rock art sites and wildlife encounters.

There can be early mornings, and you’ll need to be reasonably comfortable getting in and out of a Zodiac and walking over uneven ground to make the most of everything on offer.

One thing Dani was particularly impressed by was how well the crew assisted older and less-mobile guests. Different touring options were offered where possible, and there is also a lift onboard.

So I certainly wouldn’t rule Heritage Adventurer out just because you’re a little slower on your feet. If you have significant mobility limitations, though, I’d want to talk through the excursions with you before recommending it.

Life Onboard

There’s actually quite a lot onboard Heritage Adventurer.

You’ll find an Observation Lounge, library, gym, sauna, spa facilities and a heated outdoor saltwater pool, along with plenty of indoor and outdoor areas to relax after a day exploring.

The atmosphere is relaxed rather than formal, and the pool and outdoor areas can be a lovely place to spend some downtime.

Evenings tend to be fairly quiet, which isn’t surprising after a full day out exploring. There’s a bar and some entertainment if you feel like staying up for a drink — and according to Dani, the live music had a distinctly 80s feel to it!

Dining

There are two dining venues onboard: the Main Dining Room and The Bistro.

The Main Dining Room offers a buffet breakfast, à la carte lunch and multi-course dinner, while The Bistro offers a more relaxed alternative. Beer and wine are included with lunch and dinner.

Dani really enjoyed the food, with fresh produce and plenty of variety throughout the trip. The style is relaxed rather than formal — think good, well-prepared meals rather than highly plated fine dining.

For me, that fits Heritage Adventurer perfectly. The emphasis is on enjoying good food at the end of a day exploring, without dining being overly formal or fussy.

The Cabins

One of the things that surprised Dani most was how spacious the cabins were.

And when she said spacious, she meant it.

There’s plenty of wardrobe and cupboard space, comfortable seating and good-sized bathrooms.

Most cabin categories are also quite similar in size. As you move up through the categories, you’re generally paying for location and additional inclusions rather than a dramatically larger cabin.

The style is more traditional than some of the newer expedition ships, but the cabins are comfortable and practical.

There are no tea or coffee-making facilities in the cabins, although coffee machines are available around the ship.

One other little thing worth knowing: Dani stayed on Deck 3 and found it noisier, with more noticeable vibration from the ship.

It’s exactly the sort of detail we like to know when we’re helping you choose not just your ship, but your cabin as well.

Who Heritage Adventurer suits best

I think Heritage Adventurer is best suited to travellers who are genuinely interested in the Kimberley and want to get out and experience it.

You’ll probably love this ship if you:

Enjoy learning as much as sightseeing

Love wildlife, nature, history or photography

Want an experienced Expedition Team

Like getting off the ship and exploring

Don’t mind an early morning when there’s something worth getting up for

Prefer a comfortable, relaxed style of expedition cruising

Enjoy travelling with other curious, like-minded travellers

You may prefer another vessel if...

Heritage Adventurer isn’t for everyone.

You may prefer another Kimberley ship if you:

Want a balcony cabin

Are looking for multiple restaurants and more evening entertainment.

Prefer a more resort-style cruising experience.

Want a more formal style of dining.

Have significant mobility limitations that would make Zodiac boarding or uneven ground difficult.

And that’s okay.

Ultimately, the best Kimberley cruise is the one that matches your travel style, not simply the most luxurious or the largest.

Where Else Does Heritage Adventurer Sail?

While many Australian travellers discover Heritage Adventurer through her Kimberley itineraries, her expedition season extends well beyond Australia’s northwest.

She also explores destinations including Antarctica, Japan, New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands, the South Pacific and other remote corners of the world.

It’s this breadth of experience that has helped establish Heritage Expeditions as one of the world’s most respected names in authentic expedition cruising.

My thoughts

For me, the appeal of Heritage Adventurer is fairly simple.

The destination comes first.

But that doesn’t mean you’re roughing it. The cabins are surprisingly spacious, there’s a pool, spa, gym and comfortable lounges, and there are plenty of places to relax when you’re back onboard.

I also like knowing the little things our team picks up when they actually travel on these ships. Dani really enjoyed the food, she found Deck 3 a little noisier, and she was particularly impressed by the Expedition Team and the way the crew looked after guests.

If having a balcony cabin, lots of dining choices and a more resort-style ship experience are important to you, I’d probably point you towards another Kimberley vessel.

But if you want a genuine expedition, knowledgeable guides, comfortable accommodation and plenty of time out exploring the Kimberley, Heritage Adventurer is definitely one to consider.

What travellers say

“Their product knowledge is amazing”

I am very impressed with this company. All the staff I have dealt with have been extremely helpful and courteous, even when I have had to change my travel plans. They went out of their way to assist me with the changes. Their product knowledge is amazing and their help in arranging accommodation and tours has been fabulous. Their offer of two free nights accommodation and a free Broome sightseeing tour is an added bonus. I am very happy that I have booked with them and would thoroughly recommend them.

“The cruise suited us perfectly”

We were very pleased with the help we received from Jenny and Simon when we were deciding on which cruise to choose for our Kimberley holiday. The cruise we settled for, Coral Expeditions, suited us perfectly. We were also very pleased with the two free nights accommodation and hop on hop off bus pass in Darwin. Highly recommended.
