Kimberley Vessel Guide: Coral Expeditions

There's a reason so many travellers return to Coral Expeditions time and time again—it delivers a genuine Kimberley cruise experience.

"Is Coral Expeditions the right choice for you?"

If you’ve spent any time researching Kimberley cruises, there’s a good chance Coral has already caught your attention. Having travelled aboard Coral Expeditions several times, I can easily see why.

Here’s the thing about Coral Expeditions; it doesn’t try to be the most luxurious ship in the Kimberley, and that’s exactly why so many people love it.  It strikes a wonderful balance between genuine expedition cruising and high quality onboard living. You spend your days immersed in the Kimberley, then return to a welcoming ship.

There isn’t one “best” Kimberley cruise—only the one that’s right for you. 

One of the things we spend a lot of time doing at Expedition Partners is helping people work through these differences. Sometimes Coral is exactly the right choice.  So, if you’re wondering whether Coral Expeditions deserves a place on your shortlist, 

Here’s my honest opinion

What makes Coral Expeditions different?

If I had to sum Coral Expeditions up in one sentence, it’d be this: the ship is there to enhance the destination, never compete with it. 

As an Australian-owned and operated company, Coral understands the Kimberley incredibly well. Everything onboard feels purposeful. The ships are comfortable, the atmosphere is relaxed. 

A standout feature of every Coral voyage is its expedition team . Their guides are passionate, knowledgeable and genuinely enjoy sharing the Kimberley’s history, geology, wildlife and Indigenous culture. If you enjoy learning as you travel, you’ll come away feeling you’ve experienced much more than just the scenery.

It’s worth mentioning Coral’s purpose-built Xplorer tenders because they’re genuinely one of my favourite features. Larger and more comfortable than inflatable Zodiacs, they offer generous seating, plenty of overhead shade and even onboard toilets. That shade makes a real difference in the Kimberley, especially on longer excursions under the tropical sun, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the scenery. They’re also easier to board, which many guests really appreciate. When conditions call for it, Coral also carries Zodiacs, giving the expedition team access to shallow creeks and narrow waterways that the larger tenders can’t reach. Having both means you enjoy the comfort of the Xplorer tenders without missing out on those more remote corners of the Kimberley.

If you’re someone who worries about seasickness—and plenty of people do—this is a definite plus. Coral Expeditions’ ships feature active stabilisers. These systems help reduce the ship’s rolling motion when cruising in open water, making for a smoother and more comfortable journey. While no stabiliser can eliminate movement entirely and conditions can vary, they do make a noticeable difference.

I also love Coral’s open bridge policy. Guests are welcome to visit the bridge, chat with the Captain and officers, and gain a fascinating insight into the navigation of the ship. It’s a small touch, but one that adds to the friendly, relaxed atmosphere Coral is known for.

The three Coral ships

Coral Expeditions operates three vessels in the Kimberley. While they all share the same expedition philosophy, there are some differences.

Coral Adventurer

Coral Adventurer is a very popular choice with travellers who want a little more space without losing the expedition feel. Carrying up to 120 guests, it offers comfortable, contemporary accommodation, generous outdoor decks and a relaxed Australian atmosphere that never feels formal. Explorer and Bridge Deck cabins have private balconies; which are a lovely place to unwind and watch the Kimberley drift by after a day of exploring. The expedition team is exceptional, the food is consistently excellent, and thoughtful touches like the open bridge policy make the experience feel welcoming and personal.  Another benefit of the slightly bigger Coral ships is that they carry two Xplorer Vessels. This mean there can be more flexibility in the off boat excursions. 

If you’re looking for a ship that’s comfortable without losing sight of why you’re there, Coral gets that balance just right.

Coral Geographer

Coral Geographer is almost identical to Coral Adventurer. The layout, cabins and onboard experience are very similar, with the main difference being on the Bridge Deck. Coral Geographer has 6 suites onboard, they are slightly smaller than the suites on Coral Adventurer but are still very spacious. So, if that does not matter to you,  I generally tell clients to choose whichever itinerary or departure date suits them best. Again, being the slightly bigger ships they carry two Xplorer Vessels. This mean there can be more flexibility in the off boat excursions. 

Coral Discoverer

If you like the idea of travelling with fewer people, Coral Discoverer is well worth considering. Carrying just 72 guests, it has a noticeably more intimate feel than its larger sisters, and it doesn’t take long before the crew, expedition team and your fellow travellers all know each other by name. There’s a lovely sense of camaraderie that develops over the course of the voyage.

Don’t mistake its smaller size for a compromise on comfort. The cabins are spacious, the food is excellent, and the atmosphere onboard is relaxed and welcoming. Days are spent exploring remote river systems, towering waterfalls and ancient rock art sites, while evenings are all about sharing stories over dinner or watching another Kimberley sunset from the deck. 

If you’re looking for an authentic Kimberley experience where the destination comes first and the ship simply feels like home at the end of each day, it’s a wonderful choice.

Who Coral Expeditions suits best

I often recommend Coral Expeditions to travellers who want a balance between adventure and comfort.

If your idea of luxury isn't about the ship itself, but is standing beneath a towering Kimberley waterfall, watching the sun set over untouched coastline with a glass of wine in hand, or listening to passionate guides bring thousands of years of history to life, you'll feel right at home.

One thing I’ve noticed is that Coral tends to attract people who are genuinely interested in the destination. Travellers who love discovering the stories behind the landscapes, wildlife and cultures they encounter. Onboard, you’ll find a welcoming, down-to-earth Australian atmosphere where friendships form easily. There’s no dress code or glitzy entertainment demanding your attention. Instead, evenings are filled with laughter over exceptional meals, conversations about the day’s adventures and the shared excitement of what tomorrow will bring.

If you're looking for a Kimberley cruise that combines authentic exploration with genuine comfort, outstanding hospitality and like-minded travellers, Coral Expeditions delivers an experience that stays with you long after you've returned home.

The honest truth is that Coral Expeditions won’t be the right fit for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay. The best Kimberley cruise isn’t about choosing the “best” ship—it’s about choosing the one that suits the way you like to travel.

You may prefer another vessel if...

If you're hoping to enjoy longer walks and a more active experience each day, there are operators that offer more challenging hikes and adventurous excursions. Coral's shore excursions are generally designed to suit a broad range of guests, with walks tending to be moderate rather than particularly strenuous.

If fishing is high on your wish list, it's worth knowing that Coral is not licenced to fish as part of its Kimberley cruises. Swimming opportunities are also limited and depend on the itinerary and conditions.

Finally, consider what sort of onboard atmosphere you're looking for. The Kimberley offers everything from intimate expedition vessels carrying just a handful of guests, through to ships like Coral carrying between 72 and 120 guests and offering more spacious outdoor spaces and expert guides, and even slightly larger expedition ships with more cruise-like facilities. None is inherently better—they simply offer different styles of Kimberley experience. The key is choosing the one that's the right fit for you, and that's where we can help.

None of these are drawbacks—they’re simply differences. Everyone travels differently, and finding the right ship is all about matching the experience to your expectations.

Which Coral ship would I choose?

Again, the honest answer is that there isn’t a wrong choice. All three Coral ships deliver the same warm Australian hospitality, experienced expedition team and immersive Kimberley experience. The real decision isn’t about which ship is better—it’s about which one suits the way you like to travel.

If you enjoy contemporary design, generous outdoor spaces and having a little more room to spread out, I’d usually recommend Coral Adventurer or Coral Geographer. The onboard experience is very similar across both ships, with the main difference being the Bridge Deck Balcony Suite. For most people, the choice simply comes down to cabin availability or the departure date that best suits their plans.

If, on the other hand, you like the idea of travelling with fewer people, Coral Discoverer is well worth considering. With just 72 guests onboard, it has a more intimate feel, and it doesn’t take long before the crew and your fellow travellers know each other by name. It’s a style of cruising that many guests fall in love with and return to time and time again.

Whichever ship you choose, you’ll experience the same spectacular Kimberley, the same passionate expedition team and the same genuine Coral hospitality. The ship is simply the base from which you’ll discover one of Australia’s most remarkable destinations.
