Apparently in the early 1970s Russian engineers looking to drill for oil in what was then the Soviet Republic of Turkmenistan, unwittingly created a massive and deep pit in Turkmenistan. In typical Soviet fashion a decision was made to ignite the methane gas that had been accidentally released.
They expected the fire to burn off in a few weeks; problem solved.
But no: problem not solved. Almost half a century later this desert crater still burns brightly with no realistic expectation that it can be extinguished despite occasional announcements from the Turkmenistan government that they have a plan to do so.
This remarkable spectacle, known colloquially as the ‘Gateway to Hell’ is officially known by the mundane name, the Darvaza Gas Crater.
Few people get the chance to see this eternal blaze. Turkmenistan is not easy to reach and it has a very restrictive visa policy.
