Why did a Drug Lord import Hippos to South America?

AMA Waterways, one of our fabulous partners in Expedition travel,  has become the first major river cruise line to explore Colombia along its magnificent Magdalena River.  Its just like river cruising in Europe or Asia.

As we are sure you are aware, Hippos are not native to South America. However, thanks to Pablo Escobar, they’ve made themselves at home.

In the late 1970s, Escobar brought four hippos to his private zoo. After his death in 1993, the hippos were left to their own devices, wandering off his estate and into the wild.

Hippos have to be one of the strangest invasive creatures worldwide – courtesy of this man

They are nicknamed “Cocaine Hippos”.

Why am I telling you this; because we have very exciting news?

AMA Waterways, one of our fabulous partners in Expedition travel,  has become the first major river cruise line to explore Colombia along its magnificent Magdalena River.  Its just like river cruising in Europe or Asia.

At every stop along the river, you’ll dive into Colombia’s vibrant history, traditions, and flavours through daily included excursions.  After each adventure, you’ll return to the warm hospitality of their purpose built river ships.

This is a distinctive and exciting new destination - that’s for sure.

(Note, we can’t guarantee that you’ll see hippos. Wild animals can be a bit uncooperative like that!)

There are two exciting itineraries for you to explore. From 8 to 15 days these river cruises, offer an extensive lineup of included tours. In Colombia,  included excursions encompass historic walking tours, live music, birdwatching and boat tours, ensuring your days will be full of discovery and wonder as you immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage along the Magdalena River.
