I still remember stepping on board the Scenic Eclipse II back in 2023. It was one of her very first voyages, and I’ll never forget that feeling — like walking into a sleek floating boutique hotel, but one that just happened to take me into the most remote of Australia’s coastlines.

The first surprise? The cabins. Most Kimberley ships offer around eighteen square metres. On Scenic Eclipse II, my cabin was a spacious thirty-two square metres, with a private balcony. Every morning I’d throw open those big glass doors, let the light flood in, sip my coffee, and breathe in the Kimberley air. It was a little ritual that made me smile every single day.

And then there were the people. Not just the guests (though I met some incredible fellow travellers), but the team of experts. Historians, naturalists, marine biologists — you name it. Each conversation over dinner or on deck added another layer of understanding to what we were seeing. The Kimberley isn’t just beautiful; it’s deeply rich in story, culture, and life. Having so many passionate experts on board turned each day into a journey of discovery.

Of course, the dining was a highlight in itself — a choice of restaurants, beautifully prepared meals, and the joy of knowing drinks and excursions were all included. The only exception? Scenic Eclipse II cruise down the Kimberly Coast, WA. Well thought out itinerary, extremely well-appointed high tech ship, smiling, positive crew, exceptional food, well executed zodiac trips some exploratory with so many of the expedition crew expert in their fields. The unique geography and remoteness of the Kimberley coast made for stunning scenery with the massive tides adding to the adventures of seeing the Montgomery Reef and Horizontal Falls. Trips ashore to the ancient aboriginal sites were sensitively handled, each were different and interesting. We were able to see many crocodiles, birds, turtles, sharks, whales and other marine life some very close. On board there were several activities like nature talks, concerts — never a dull moment.
