Will you see penguins on your Antarctic cruise?

You will see several types of penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands where the majority of expedition vessels travel.

You bet you will; lots of them. Thousands probably….

You’ll see them swimming in the clear waters from your zodiac in little pods.

You’ll see them cooling their feet (yep) in ice cold puddles of water.

You’ll see them bunched around their chicks to deter the opportunistic seabirds floating above.

With no land predators you will walk amongst them - they will basically ignore you if you don’t try to bother them.

You will see several types of penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands where the majority of expedition vessels travel.

Adélie penguins

These are the penguins you are most likely to see on your trip. Many species of penguin are found outside of Antarctica (Phillip Island for example) but Adélie penguins are only found in Antarctica.

And yet they are probably the most populous species and there are an estimated 10 million of this type in Antarctica. You will definitely see Adélie penguins on your Antarctic cruise.

(and the name? Adelie penguins are named after the wife of the French explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville)

Gentoo Penguins

Gentoo penguins are the third largest penguin species with heights of up to 90cm (more about the two larger ones shortly).

Again you are likely to see many Gentoo penguins on your Antarctic voyage.

(There is some controversy over the name gentoo as apparently it is a derogatory Portuguese word – possible candidate for a rename perhaps?)

Chinstrap

This is the third most likely penguin you will walk amongst – these are my favourite. They are very cute

No prizes for guessing how they got their name.

Other penguins you might also see include Rockhopper, Macaron and Magellanic penguins.

So in answer to the question – Will I see penguins on my Antarctic cruise? The answer is definitely and lots of them – Chinstrap, Adelie and Gentoo penguins – no problem.

What about the bigger penguins?

Well they can be seen as well but a little more planning (from you, with our help) is required and you can’t just stick to the standard Antarctic Peninsula/South Shetland Islands itinerary.

King penguins

Best option is to include South Georgia on your Antarctica itinerary

Emperor penguins

The biggest of them all – real preparation is required if you simply have to see the Emperor
