Wildlife Wonders of the Kimberley

Dingoes are woven into the fabric of the Kimberley landscape. Shy and often unseen, they’re the quiet custodians of the bush, helping to keep the ecosystem in balance by managing populations of smaller animals. If you’re lucky enough to see one on your travels, it’s a moment worth savouring.

Surprisingly, kangaroos aren’t very common in this region — but wallabies more than make up for it. The Agile Wallaby is the most frequently spotted, bouncing across the open savannah. And if you’re really lucky (and looking carefully), you might just spot a Monjon – the tiniest rock wallaby in Australia, tucked away in the Kimberley’s rocky crevices.

The bush gets busy after dark. The Kimberley is home to a whole cast of small, mostly nocturnal marsupials:

• Bandicoots, rummaging through the undergrowth
• Quolls, shy predators with their spotted coats
• Dunnarts, Bilbies, and Echidnas, each with their own quiet, quirky charm

My tip? Take a torch and tread gently. The best wildlife moments happen when you’re still and patient.

Known to the Wunambal people as yilangal, the Scaly-tailed Possum is found only here. It’s nocturnal, elusive, and brilliantly adapted to its rocky surroundings thanks to its gripping, scale-covered tail. It’s the kind of creature that feels like a hidden Kimberley secret — rarely seen, but always present.

If you’ve never watched a flying fox colony take to the sky at dusk, you’re in for a treat. These huge fruit bats – loud, smelly, unforgettable – are pollinators and seed spreaders, doing important work for the region’s plant life. The sight (and sound!) of thousands of them taking off at once is something you won’t soon forget.

Saltwater crocodiles are the Kimberley’s most legendary residents. These prehistoric giants glide through estuaries and bask on muddy banks, and deserve every bit of respect they get.

You’re more likely to see freshwater crocs — smaller and generally harmless if left alone. But whether it’s a croc slipping beneath the water or staring from the shoreline, they’re a powerful reminder of how wild this place truly is.

Reptile fans, rejoice:

• Blue-tongue lizards flash their signature tongues to startle predators
• Goannas wander with prehistoric purpose
• Frilled lizards puff up dramatically when surprised — an absolute delight if you catch it

The Kimberley is home to both venomous and non-venomous snakes, all well adapted to the region’s diverse habitats. The King Brown commands healthy respect, while pythons like the Olive and Black-headed Rock Python are more likely to be seen and admired.

A real prize sighting? The elusive Rough-scaled Python – stunning, rare, and only found in a small corner of the country.

It’s not just the land that’s buzzing with life. The ocean and rivers are full of surprises too:

• Dolphins often trail alongside boats
• Barramundi, queenfish, and other species dart beneath the surface
• Turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, and even humpback whales (in season) all make appearances
• And coral reefs fringe the coast with vibrant life
